Governor's Address
A speech prepared by the government and delivered by the Governor to the MLAs on the first day of the budget session.
Budget Speech
A presentation prepared by the finance department and read by the Chief Minister that includes the demand for grants.
Starred Questions
Questions replied to instantly in the assembly by a minister, allowing the asking MLA to pose five supplementary questions.
Unstarred Questions
Questions with lengthy answers that are put in statement form and circulated to all MLAs rather than being answered orally.
Adjournment Motion
A specific type of motion in the assembly that involves voting.
Government Resolution
A resolution brought forward specifically by the government.
Private Members Resolution
A resolution brought by any MLA from the ruling or opposition side, excluding Ministers.
Zero Hour Notice
A five-minute notice brought by an opposition MLA regarding a very important subject from a newspaper requiring urgent discussion.
Call Attention Notice
A ten-minute discussion notice highlighting a news item, where the MLA can ask for one clarification after the minister's reply.
Short Duration Discussion
A notice submitted by an MLA and supported by one or two others with an explanatory note; it involves discussion but no voting.
Government Bills
Bills introduced by the government that generally pass due to the government's majority in the house.
Private Members Bills
Bills brought by an MLA from the opposition side that are generally rejected at the introduction stage due to lack of majority support.
Financial Committees
The three assembly committees consisting of the Public Accounts Committee, Public Undertakings Committee, and Public Estimate Committee.
Supplementary Demand for Grants
A request for additional funds presented by the Chief Minister when departments experience a shortage of money.
Demand for Grants
The allocation of different amounts of money for various government departments after the budget is presented.
Cut Motion
A motion brought by the opposition to reduce the amount of expenditure the government has requested for a department.
Rule 55
The rule under which a Chief Minister or any Minister can make an urgent statement in the house with the approval of the Speaker.
Gazette
The official publication where a bill is printed after it has been passed by the house and received the Governor's assent.
