Drug
Substances other than food that change the structure or function of the body or mind.
Medicine
Drugs that are used to treat or prevent diseases or other conditions.
Antibiotics
Medicines that treat bacterial infections.
OTC (Over-the-counter)
Medicines that can be purchased without a doctor's prescription.
Prescription Medicine
Medicines that are dispensed only with the written approval of a licensed physician or nurse-practitioner.
Vaccines
Preparations that prevent a person from contracting a specific disease.
Side Effects
Reactions to medicine other than the one indicated.
Withdrawal
Symptoms that occur when a person stops using a medicine on which they have become physiologically dependent.
Tolerance
The body requires increasingly larger doses to produce the same effect.
Drug Overdose
A strong, sometimes fatal reaction to taking a large amount of a drug.
FDA (Food and Drug Administration)
Government agency in charge of regulating food, medicine, drugs, tobacco, and cosmetics but does not regulate herbal and dietary supplements.
Nicotine
The addictive drug found in tobacco.
Leukoplakia
Thickened, white leathery-looking spots on the inside of the mouth that can develop into oral cancer.
BAC (Blood Alcohol Content)
A measure of the amount of alcohol in a person's bloodstream.
Depressant
A category of drugs, including alcohol, that slows down the central nervous system.
Cirrhosis of the Liver
A long-term consequence of excessive alcohol use.
Stimulants
Drugs that increase the action of the central nervous system, the heart, and other organs.
Opiate/Narcotics
Drugs obtainable only by prescription, derived from the opium plant and used to relieve pain.
Hallucinogens
Drugs that distort a person's perceptions, disrupting the ability to distinguish reality.
Inhalants
Substances whose fumes are sniffed or inhaled to create effects.
Euphoria
A feeling of intense well-being or elation.
Physical (Physiological) Addiction/Dependence
A change in body chemistry requiring a substance for normal functioning, leading to withdrawal symptoms.
Psychological Addiction/Dependence
A craving for something; a mental dependence on a drug or behavior.
Rehabilitation
The process of medical and psychological treatment for physiological or psychological dependence on a drug.
Enabler
Someone who supports the harmful behavior of another by saving them from the consequences of their actions.
