Word root
The core of a word.
Suffix
A word part attached to the end of a word root to modify its meaning.
Prefix
A word part attached to the beginning of a word root to modify its meaning.
Combining vowel
Usually the letter 'o', used to ease pronunciation when connecting word parts.
Combining form
A word root with a combining vowel attached, separated by a slash (e.g., hepat/o).
Medical terms NOT Built from Word Parts
Terms that cannot be easily translated by their individual word parts to find their meanings, primarily learned through memorization.
Eponyms
Medical terms derived from the name of a person or place, such as Apgar score and West Nile virus.
Acronyms
Medical terms formed from the first letter of words in a phrase that can be spoken as a whole word, usually containing a vowel (e.g., MRSA).
Modern language (medical terms)
Medical terms derived from the English language, such as complete blood count with differential.
Orthopedic (categorized as NOT Built from Word Parts)
A term for a branch of medicine dealing with the study and treatment of diseases and abnormalities of the musculoskeletal system, categorized as such because its literal translation from word parts (pertaining to a straight child or foot) does not match its current meaning.
Analyzing (medical terms)
A technique to learn medical terms built from word parts by dividing them into word parts, labeling each, and identifying combining forms.
Defining (medical terms)
A technique to learn medical terms built from word parts by applying the meaning of each word part, starting with the suffix and then moving to the beginning of the term.
