Conserve & Restore View
We sleep to conserve energy and to restore aspects of our physiology.
Preservation
We sleep to stay safe, away from predators.
Memory Consolidation View
We sleep to build better memories.
Electroencephalogram (EEG)
A test that records brain waves and is used to identify different stages of sleep.
Non-REM (NREM) Sleep
The initial stages of sleep that include stages 1-4, before entering REM sleep.
REM Sleep
A stage of sleep characterized by low voltage, random fast brain waves, and increased eye movement.
Activation-synthesis hypothesis
A theory that dreams reflect the brain's activated state during REM sleep.
Freudian Dreaming
The idea that dreams serve as a 'royal road to the unconscious,' revealing latent content masked by manifest content.
Problem Solving during sleep
The concept that some problems can be worked on or solved during sleep.
Hypnogram
A graphical representation of the stages of sleep throughout the night.
Sleep Spindle
A burst of brain activity that occurs in stage 2 sleep.
K Complex
A large wave in EEG reflecting a response to external stimuli during sleep.
Theta Waves
Brain waves present during light sleep stages (1 and 2).
Delta Waves
Slow brain waves seen in deep sleep (Stage 4).
Place Cells
Neurons in the brain that activate in relation to specific locations, suggested to play a role in memory during REM sleep.
Hypnotic Susceptibility
A personality characteristic that denotes how easily someone can be hypnotized, involving suggestibility and absorption.
