What is a force?
A force is a push, a pull or a twist.
What are the seven ways forces can affect objects?
Forces can cause objects to: begin to move, speed up, slow down or stop moving, change direction, change shape, spin, or remain still.
What instrument is used to measure force?
A spring balance.
What is the unit used for measuring forces?
Newtons (N).
What is the effect of an unbalanced force on an object?
An unbalanced force causes a change in the object's motion.
In a force diagram, how are forces represented?
Force diagrams use arrows to represent forces.
What is the total force acting on an object called?
Net force.
To what location does Earth's gravity pull objects?
To the centre of the Earth.
Is the pull of gravity identical for every object?
No, the pull of gravity is not the same for every object.
What happens to the pull of gravity as an object moves away from Earth?
The pull of gravity decreases as you move away from Earth.
What effect does friction have on moving objects?
Friction slows down moving objects.
What are the two general classifications of forces based on physical interaction?
Contact and non-contact forces.
How is air resistance defined?
Air resistance is the friction between a moving object and the air it moves through.
What is the purpose of streamlining objects?
Streamlining helps objects overcome air resistance.
