CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft)
A surgical procedure to restore normal blood flow to an obstructed coronary artery. Also known as coronary artery bypass surgery, coronary artery bypass graft surgery, or heart bypass.
CAD (Coronary Artery Disease)
Damage or disease in the heart's major blood vessels, usually due to plaque buildup, narrowing coronary arteries and limiting blood flow.
CBC (Complete Blood Count)
A panel of tests that measures the concentrations of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets, plus hemoglobin and hematocrit.
cc (Cubic Centimeter)
Unit of volume equal to the volume of a cube measuring 1 cm on each side.
CCU (Coronary Care Unit)
A hospital ward specialized in monitoring and treating patients with heart conditions, such as heart attacks and dysrhythmias.
CHFO (Congestive Heart Failure)
A condition where the heart's pumping ability is insufficient to meet the body's needs.
CFQ (Cystic Fibrosis)
A genetic disorder that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system.
cm (Centimeter)
Unit of length in the metric system; equal to 1/100 of a meter.
CNS (Central Nervous System)
Nerve tissues that control the body's activities; comprises the brain and spinal cord.
CO2 (Carbon Dioxide)
Colorless, odorless gas produced by respiration and combustion; present in air and used by plants in photosynthesis.
COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
Group of lung diseases that obstruct airflow and make breathing difficult; includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis; damage is not reversible.
CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)
Emergency procedure of chest compressions, often with artificial ventilation, to preserve brain function until circulation and breathing are restored.
CR (Computed Radiography)
Digital replacement of conventional X-ray film radiography, offering several advantages.
CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists)
Advanced practice nurses who administer anesthesia for surgery or procedures; autonomy varies by country.
CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid)
Clear, colorless fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord; produced by choroid plexus and absorbed in arachnoid granulations.
CSRT (California Society of Radiologic Technologists)
State affiliate of the ASRT; nonprofit organization representing California radiographers.
CT (Computed Tomography)
Imaging modality that uses a series of X-ray images from different angles and computer processing to create cross-sectional images.
CVA (Cerebrovascular Accident)
Stroke caused by an interruption in blood flow to brain cells due to blockage or rupture.
CXR (Chest X-Ray)
Imaging of the heart, lungs, vessels, airways, and chest bones; can reveal fluid or air around the lungs.
DC (Discontinue or Cancel)
Abbreviation for discontinue or cancel.
DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry)
Bone density scan using low-dose X-rays to assess bone density and osteoporosis risk.
DJD (Degenerative Joint Disease)
Osteoarthritis; wear-and-tear arthritis with stiffness, pain, and swelling.
DM (Diabetes Mellitus)
Disorder where the body does not produce enough or respond normally to insulin, causing high blood glucose; symptoms include increased urination and thirst, and sometimes weight loss.
DOA (Dead on Arrival)
Indicates a patient was found clinically dead; also described as dead in the field or BID.
DOB (Date of Birth)
Day you were born.
DR (Digital Radiography)
Advanced form of X-ray imaging that produces a digital radiographic image instantly on a computer.
