who were progressives
mor wealthier people who worked together to try and reform society and the government for the better and improve the coditions of cities.

they were writers and journalists who wrote about all the horrible conditions ordinary people had to go through everyday to show the true horrors and stability of cities and people.
were immigrants friends
yes the progressives wanted to help the immigrants and help them become a US citizen for example, Jane Addams create a Hull House for immigrants to adapt to the environment and get set up with jobs.
politcal machines
they were a way for businesseman and leaders to control immigrants voting. They would offer them jobs and housing and then when it came to vote, if they were caught voting the other way then what they are told then they were killed. Marcy Tweed was a famous boss in NY who used this idea.

what causes did women in the Progressive Movement champion during the 1900s. Who were some of the key leaders?
women championed the right to vote, to have an education, have a bigger role. some key figures was Jane Addams, Carrie Nation, Susan B Anthony and more. their efforts finally showed results when amendment 18 was passed for their right to vote
were progressives successful in extending opportunities to all different types of Americans?
kinda, they worked hard to help everyone but because of the time period they weren’t able to give the African Americans much help compared to workers and women.
what specific social, economic and poltical achievements did the progressive movement achieve during the time period 1880-1920? What was the lasting legacy?
socially child labor laws were placed, public health improved and women got the right to vote. economically, the Sherman Antitrust Act and the Clayton Antitrust Act were placed to handle monoplies, 16th amendment to collect income tax and labor rights for minimum wage and shorter work days. politically, amendment 17 letting people vote anonymously, amendment 19 giving women the right to vote, and better man for the job. the lasting legacy was that labor protections, stronger government control, more political participation and consumer protections were made.
what was the quality of life back at the turn of 20th century?
living conditions - people live in crowded cities, unsanitary housing and streets, and healthcare was minimumal
social problems - women weren’t able to vote, racism and descrimination was popular, many children worked instead of going to school, immigrants were stuck in ethnic ghettos
work life - long hours, low pay, dangerous jobs, child labor.
what were progressives feelings about peoples morals and crime?
they believed crimes cause a lot of bad living conditions and ghettos. they thought that if society became healthier than crime and immoral behavior would go down.
what amendments were passed during this time period, and more importantly why were they passed?
amendment 16, 17, 18, 19. 16 was passed to have income tax to pay for services to make cities more well runned and the country protected. 17 was to stop political machines and make it so people can vote anonymously. 18 was to ban alcohol because people believed it cause crime and poverty and health issues. 19 said that women had the right to vote

they were peole who cleaned up the problems of society by writing about the tru horrors and conditions people had to deal with. Upton Sinclair was famous for writing the Jungle about the terrible conditions in meat packaging facilities.
how did progressives work to improve the quality of living in citie?
they places amendment 16 that gave more services like trash pickup and made them more sanitary. they passed building codes so houses were less crowded, created sewer systems, and built schools and parks.
how did they work to bring equality and fairness back to the polls?
they fought political machines, amendment 17, they helped immigrants, and gave women the right to vote.

he disocvered unsafe work in a meat packaging company that had unsafe food production, health risks that exposed the truths of many companies and led to laws that pt restrictions on companies to keep people healthy and safe.

immigrants were treated poorly for American society, they were discriminated. progressives wanted to help them and set up a Hull House to help them become a better citizen.
how did immigrants try and hold onto their culture and “Old World” roots? How did immigrants try & assimilate? Why didn’t progressives fight harder for immigrants? did racism & prejudice play any part?
They spoke their native language, and formed ethnic groups and celebrated holidays together. they tried to learn English to fit in, follow American laws, change their style of clothing. because they were more focused on fixing cities and they thought immigrants caused crime and poverty so they tried to help them become better citizens.
what are the biggest triumphs of the progressive era? What are the shortcomings?
political reforms, the people got more of a say in gov’t, safer food and sanitation, better living conditions, child labor laws, better working conditions, education. shortcomings - racism, African Americans were still ignored, immigrants lost alot of their culture, big companies still found ways to go around the laws.
