Matter
Any substance that has mass, has volume, and takes up space.
Volume
The amount of space an object takes up.
Solid
A state of matter that has a fixed shape and volume, with tightly packed molecules that only vibrate.
Liquid
A state of matter that takes the shape of its container but has a fixed volume, with closely packed molecules that can move around.
Gas
A state of matter that has no fixed shape or volume, with molecules that are far apart and move freely.
Displacement
Measuring the volume of a solid by the amount the water level in a graduated cylinder rises.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object.
Chemical Reaction
A chemical process that changes one or more substances into a different and new substance.
Precipitate
A solid that forms when two liquids are mixed and a chemical reaction occurs.
Insoluble
When one substance is not able to completely dissolve into another substance.
Soluble
When one substance can completely dissolve into another substance.
Property
A characteristic of a substance that does not change.
Mixture
A blend of two or more substances.
Particle
Tiny pieces of 'stuff' or matter that cannot be seen; can refer to atoms or molecules.
