Simple Squamous Epithelium
Single layer of flattened cells with disc-shaped central nuclei; allows materials to pass by diffusion and filtration in sites where protection is not important, and secretes lubricating substances in serosae.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Single layer of cube-like cells with large, spherical central nuclei; functions primarily in secretion and absorption.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Single layer of tall cells with round to oval nuclei; functions in absorption, secretion of mucus and enzymes, and propulsion of mucus by ciliary action when ciliated.
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Single layer of cells of differing heights with nuclei seen at different levels; functions in secreting substances (particularly mucus) and propelling mucus via ciliary action.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Thick membrane composed of several cell layers with metabolically active basal cells and flattened superficial cells; protects underlying tissues in areas subjected to abrasion.
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Epithelial tissue generally consisting of two layers of cube-like cells, functioning primarily in protection.
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
Epithelial tissue consisting of several layers with cuboidal basal cells and elongated superficial cells; functions in protection and secretion.
Transitional Epithelium
Epithelial tissue featuring dome-shaped or flattened surface cells depending on stretch; readily stretches to permit distension of urinary organs.
