ireland is the oldest british colony. northern ireland was created in 1921, it was needed to be created cuz scots living there

did not want to identify as ireland. northern ireland is part of the UK but that doesnt mean all the people living there identify as british

  • legality of the partition was not accepted, which is why the irish republic army was created in 1968 - considered legal irish state but not in british side → followed by a guerrilla war with the goal of reuniting the two parts of ireland → creation of ira was followed by bombings, ambushes, assassinations, attacks in london underground, 2000+ died

  • in 1998 the good friday agreement occurred signifying an open border in ireland (wont notice when u cross the border within ireland aside from signs to buy euro vs pound)

  • 2020 brexit came to force - border remained open; if u wanted to go northern ireland to great britain you had to go through passport check
