Election of 1800
cause: Jefferson (Democrat) defeats adams
effect: democratic-repbublicans take power which was 1st peaceful transition of parties (allows allien and sedition acts to expire and cuts taxes)

causes:
1. impressment, British were stopping American ships and forcing American sailors into British navy
2. Britian seizing American ships landing in french ports-violation of neutral rights and taking cargo
3. embargo act of 1807 attempted to solve problems diplomatically by closing all American ports to foreign trade but was unpopular
4. Tecumseh, shawnee indian cheif, attacked frontier settlements
5. americans beilved the british encouraged shawnee to attack
6. william henry harrison defeted sawnee at battle of tippecanoe and the final defeat and the death of Tecumseh occured at the battle of the Thames
7. british have not left the forts in the ohio river valley and are limiting territorial expansion oppurtunities in the west
8. this is also a matter of national pride

missouri compromise (1820)
-admitted missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state
-prohibited slavery in the rest of the Louisiana purchase

-spain ceded florida to the US and redefined the boundery

Monroe Doctrine (1823)
-US foreign policy opposinf european coloniallism
told europeans to no longer interfere in the western hemisphere
if they did, US would view this as a threat
US promised to stay out of the affairs of existing colonies
Indian Removal Act in Georgia (1825-31)
-georgians demanded better farm land
-monroes agrees in 1825
-georgia passes laws to abolish cherokee law and government and distribute their territory to white farmers
-paved way for indian removal act (1830) and the Trial of Tears

-congressmen henry clay proposed improving america’s infrastructure, roads, canals, and railways
-promoted tariff to protect american industry and a national bank to foster commerce
-monroe opposed but many projects passed by congress
