Endochondral ossification
The process starting in the late embryonic period (week 8) that forms all other bones (endochondral or cartilage bones) where a hyaline cartilage model is gradually replaced by osseous tissue.
Epiphyseal cartilage (epiphyseal plate)
The growth structure separating the diaphysis from the epiphysis where developing bone length increases by adding new cartilage at the epiphyseal side and replacing older cartilage with osseous tissue at the diaphyseal side.
Appositional growth
The process by which bone diameter grows at the outer surface of the bone.
Zone of Resting cartilage
The first zone within the epiphyseal cartilage when organized from the epiphyseal side to the diaphyseal side.
Zone of Proliferating cartilage
The second consecutive zone within the epiphyseal cartilage, following the Zone of Resting cartilage.
Zone of Hypertrophy
The third consecutive zone within the epiphyseal cartilage, following the Zone of Proliferating cartilage.
Zone of Calcification
The fourth consecutive zone within the epiphyseal cartilage, located closest to the diaphyseal side.

A mnemonic device for remembering the consecutive zones within the epiphyseal cartilage from epiphyseal to diaphyseal side (Resting, Proliferating, Hypertrophy, Calcification).
