alimentary canal

The organs through which food is moved: esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine.

Esophagus

Hollow tube, food mixed with saliva and moved to bolus using peristalsis

Stomach

food is mixed by churning and protein digestion begins.

acidic environment created by gastric puts that release digestive juices

Small intestine

Highly folded with villi where nutrients are absorbed: duedenum, jejunum, and ileum

Large intestine

Where water and dissolved minerals are absorbed.

Accessory organs

Pancreas: makes enzymes that are released in stomach via duodenum.

makes hormones that regulate blood sugar concentrations.
