Monohybrid Inheritance
The inheritance of one trait - determined by one gene and its alleles
Complete Dominance
When a dominant allele completely masks the expression of a recessive allele
Incomplete Dominance
No allele is completely dominant over the other - Neither allele is fully expressed in the heterozygote
Co-Dominance
Both alleles are equally dominant - both alleles are independently expressed in the heterozygote
Lethal Allele
Gene mutations that disrupt the function of an essential gene
Dihybrid Inheritance
The inheritance of two traits - determined by two genes and its alleles
Allele Frequency
Number of a particular allele in a gene pool
Gene flow
The immigration of genes from a gene pool
Genetic Diversity
Variations in the genetics of a population
Genetic drift
Frequency of alleles in a population changes over time due to random chance rather than natural selection
Founder effect
New population loses genetic diversity because it was started by a very small group of individuals
Bottleneck Effect
A sharp, random reduction in a population’s size and genetic diversity caused by natural disasters or human activities
Natural Selection
Organisms with best traits best suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce
