Dense Regular Connective Tissue
A tissue type whose function is to resist forces in a single direction, with examples including tendons and ligaments.
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue
A stretchy and strong tissue type that resists forces in multiple directions, found in the dermis (lower-middle layer) of the skin.
Areolar Connective Tissue
A loose connective tissue that provides general structure, found inside most organs and giving structure to muscle tissue.
Reticular Connective Tissue
A loose connective tissue that provides support for soft lymphatic organs, such as lymph nodes and the spleen.
Adipose Connective Tissue
Fat tissue that functions in energy storage and protection, found in the hypodermis layer of the skin and inside muscle tissue.
Avascular
A term describing tissue, such as cartilage, that has very little blood supply going to it.
Hyaline Cartilage
The typical cartilage found in most places in the human body, including between joints, surrounding the trachea (air pipe), ribcage (costal cartilage), and parts of the fetal skeleton.
Fibrocartilage
A strong cartilage that braces for heavy impact, located in intervertebral discs and the menisci (pads inside the knees).
Elastic Cartilage
A very bendy cartilage located in areas needing a bit of wiggle, such as ear lobes and the inner ear.
Compact Bone
Bone tissue that gives the body a rigid, very strong structure, as strong as steel reinforced concrete.
Spongy Bone
Bone tissue that lightens the weight of the bone for easier movement and serves as the location where blood cells are born.
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells that transport nutrients and gasses.
Leukocytes
White blood cells that function as immune cells.
Platelets
Also known as thrombocytes, these blood components aid in blood clotting.
Blood Plasma
The liquid matrix of blood tissue.
Lymph
One of the liquid connective tissues.
Skeletal Muscle
Muscle tissue responsible for voluntary actions, like walking and picking up stuff.
Smooth Muscle
Muscle tissue responsible for involuntary actions, like digesting food.
Cardiac Muscle
Muscle tissue that pumps blood from the heart.
Neurons
Nervous tissue cells that receive and transmit signals.
Glial Cells
Nervous tissue cells that perform general housekeeping, such as taking out bacteria and modifying pH levels.
Carcinoma
Cancer originating from epithelial tissue.
Basal Cell Carcinoma
Cancer originating from the basal layer of the epidermis.
Myeloma
Cancer originating from myeloid tissue (red bone marrow) and blood cells.
Leukemia
Cancer originating from white blood cells.
Sarcoma
Cancer originating from connective tissue.
