Thyroid gland
Inferior to larynx, produces thyroid hormones, only gland in body that can absorb iodine to put into thyroid hormones, controls metabolism, produces calcitonin that acts to decrease blood calcium levels
Thyroid hormone functions
Increase basal metabolic rate = increased heat production, stimulate protein synthesis and usage of fuels to make atp, enhance sympathetic activity, essential for normal growth and development
Regulation of thyroid secretion
Stimulus, hypothalamus released thyrotropin releasing hormone to anterior pituitary, releases thyroid stimulating hormone to thyroid gland, releases thyroid hormone in blood stream, muscle adipose tissue and heart increase basal metabolic rate, as metabolic rate rising hormone release stops
