1. little extracellular space

2. Cell junctions are abundant; strength & communication

3. Polarity- distinct apical & basal surfaces

Special characteristics of epithelium part 2

1. Sits on basement membrane support

   2. Avascular( no blood vessels)

   3. Innervated (yes nerves )

   4. Regeneration -high capacity to replace cells

Basal(bottom part) surface features

Basal lamina non-cellular sheet of proteins; provide surface for new cells to build on

Basement membrane made of = basal lamina & reticular fibers of underlying Conective tissue

( the basal surface features provide support and keeps tissue in place)

Apical surface features (top part)

1. Microvilli

-folds of plasma membrane of moist epithelial tissue

-makes SA larger which is better for absorption and moving thing in and out

2. Cilia

-whiplike, motile extensions of cell surface; found in some locations

• Movement of mucus
