Spinal Deformity Correction
Procedures to correct spinal deformities, such as scoliosis and kyphosis.
Instrumentation
Support and stability to the spinal column after a primary procedure.
Spinal Osteotomy
Cutting and removing a portion of the vertebral segment in preparation for realigning the spine as part of a spinal deformity correction.
Procedures that can be reported together
Laminectomy, facetectomy, foramenectomy, discectomy.
Procedures that can be reported separately
Arthrodesis, grafting, instrumentation.
CPT codes 22206 through add on code 22208
Procedures performed on the thoracic or lumbar spine through a posterior or posterolateral approach.
Spinal Anatomy
Vertebral body makes up the anterior portion of the spinal column. The pedicle is part of the posterior spinal column.
Three Column Osteotomy
Vertebra is then positioned into correct alignment after the cuts have been made and bone is removed.
Smith Peterson Osteotomy or Ponte Osteotomy
Opening wedge osteotomy that removes bone from the posterior elements to develop a gap for spinal realignment.
Arthrodesis for Spinal Deformity Correction
Arthrodesis for spinal deformity correction is not differentiated by spinal region, rather only the approach to the spine is differentiated. Then the code is selected based on the number of segments fused.
