How is anatomy defined in Biology 2301?
Anatomy is the scientific study of the body's structures.
What are the main subdivisions of gross (macroscopic) anatomy?
Regional, surface, and systemic anatomy.
What are the five essential tools for the study of anatomy listed in the lecture?
Mastery of anatomical terminology, observation, manipulation, palpation, and auscultation.
How is physiology defined?
Physiology is the scientific study of the chemistry and physics of the structures of the body and the ways in which they work together to support the functions of life.

What are the six distinct levels of structural organization in the human body from smallest to largest?
Chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, organ system, and organismal.
What is defined as the smallest independently functioning unit of a living organism?
The cell.
What is a tissue?
A group of many similar cells that work together to perform a specific function.
What is the primary function of the integumentary system?
Forms the external body covering, protects deeper tissues from injury, synthesizes vitamin D, and houses cutaneous receptors and sweat and oil glands.
Which organ system serves as the fast-acting control system of the body?
The nervous system.
What are the key functions of the skeletal system?
Protects and supports body organs, provides a framework for muscles to cause movement, forms blood cells within bones, and stores minerals.
What is the primary function of the lymphatic system/immunity?
Picks up fluid leaked from blood vessels and returns it to blood, disposes of debris in the lymphatic stream, and houses white blood cells (lymphocytes) involved in immunity.
What is the difference between catabolic and anabolic reactions?
Catabolic reactions break materials down and release energy, while anabolic reactions are building reactions that consume energy.
What chemical is identified as the most abundant chemical in the body?
Water.
What is homeostasis?
Maintaining a stable internal environment despite outside changes, representing a dynamic state of balance.
What are the three essential components of a homeostatic control mechanism?
Receptor (sensor), control center, and effector.
What is the difference between afferent and efferent pathways in a control mechanism?
Input information is sent along the afferent pathway from the receptor to the control center, while output information is sent along the efferent pathway from the control center to the effector.
What is negative feedback?
A physiological mechanism that reverses a deviation from the set point to maintain body parameters within their normal range.
In negative feedback regulation of blood volume by ADH, what acts as the control center and what acts as the effector?
The control center is in the hypothalamus (stimulating the pituitary gland to release ADH), and the kidneys act as the effectors.
How does positive feedback differ from negative feedback?
Positive feedback enhances or exaggerates the original stimulus, resulting in a change in the body's status rather than a return to homeostasis.
What are two examples of normal positive feedback loops mentioned in the lecture?
Enhancement of labor contractions by oxytocin, and platelet plug formation/blood clotting.
What criteria define the standard anatomical position?
Body erect (standing upright), feet slightly apart (shoulder width, parallel, toes forward), palms facing forward, and thumbs away from the body.
What is the difference between proximal and distal directional terms?
Proximal describes a position in a limb that is nearer to the point of attachment or trunk, while distal describes a position farther from the point of attachment or trunk.
What are the three planes most commonly used in anatomical and medical imaging?
Sagittal plane, frontal (or coronal) plane, and transverse plane.
Which primary body cavity protects the nervous system, and what are its subdivisions?
The dorsal cavity; its subdivisions are the cranial cavity (encases brain) and vertebral cavity (encases spinal cord).
What structure separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominopelvic cavity?
The diaphragm.
What is the functional difference between parietal serosa and visceral serosa?
Parietal serosa lines internal body walls, whereas visceral serosa covers the internal organs.
What are the specific names of the serous membranes for the heart, lungs, and abdomen?
Pericardium for the heart, pleura for the lungs, and peritoneum for the abdomen.
