Acid
A substance that donates H+ (hydronium ion) in a chemical reaction.
HCl
A common acid known as hydrochloric acid, recognized by the hydrogen at the beginning.
Anion
A negatively charged ion that forms part of an acid.
Hydro- -ic Acid
The naming convention for acids when the anion does not contain oxygen.
-ate
Suffix used in acid names when the anion name ends in -ate, leading to an -ic acid name.
-ite
Suffix used in acid names when the anion name ends in -ite, leading to an -ous acid name.
HF
Hydrofluoric acid, an example of an acid that does not contain oxygen.
Naming Rule for Acids
Identify the anion first and then apply specific naming rules based on the anion's characteristics.
H2SO4
Sulfuric acid, named according to the -ate ending of its anion.
Hydrobromic Acid
An acid formed from Br- (bromide) that follows the naming convention for non-oxygen anions.
Writing Acids Steps
Identify the anion, write its formula, add H+ atoms according to the anion charge, and remove all charges.
Nitric Acid
The name of HNO3, derived from the -ate ending of the anion nitrate (NO3-).
