Acid ions
Ions that produce hydrogen ions (H+) or hydronium ions (H3O+) in solution.
Base ions
Ions that produce hydroxide ions (OH-) in solution.
Metals (reactivity with acids)
Acids react with them to form a salt solution and hydrogen gas (H2).
Table J
Reference table that indicates metal reactivity with acids.
Table K
Reference table that lists common acids, distinguishing between strong and weak acids.
pH
Scale used to measure the acidity or basicity of a solution; acids have values below 7.
Electrolytes
Substances that conduct electricity when dissolved in water due to the presence of mobile ions.
Bases
Metal hydroxides and ammonia that produce hydroxide ions (OH-) in solution.
Alkaline
Another term used to refer to a base.
pH (for bases)
Scale where bases have values above 7.
Salts
Ionic compounds that are strong electrolytes and dissociate into ions when dissolved in water.
pH
Measurement of the amount of hydrogen ions in a solution.
Neutralization
State where the amount of hydrogen ions (H+) equals the amount of hydroxide ions (OH-), resulting in a pH of 7.
Neutralization reaction
Acid + Base yields Salt + Water
Titration
Experiment performed to determine the molarity or volume of an acid or base.
Titration Formula
Formula used in titration calculations: M1V1 = M2V2.
Table M
Reference table that lists indicators that change color depending on the pH.
pH change of one unit
A tenfold increase in hydrogen ion concentration.
