Point
indicates location, it has no size and no dimension
Line
a set of continuous points that extends endlessly in opposite directions, one dimension
Plane
a flat surface with no thickness and extends indefinitely in all directions, 2 dimensions
Line Segment
part of a line consisting of two points
Ray
line segment that continues indefinitely in only one direction
Opposite Rays
rays that have the same endpoint and lie on the same line, but extend in opposite directions
Collinear Points
points that lie on the same line
Coplanar Points
points that lie on the same plane
Endpoints
points on the ends of line segments
Intersection
when two or more lines or planes have one or more points in common
Congruent Segments
segments that have the same length
Midpoint (definition)
a point that divides a segment into two congruent segments
Segment Bisector
a point, line, ray, segment, or plane that intersects a segment at its midpoint
Midpoint Formula
[(x₁ + x₂)/2 , (y₁ + y₂)/2]
Distance Formula
square root of [( x₂ - x₁)² + (y₂ - y₁)²]
Angle
the intersection of two rays with a common endpoint
Adjacent Angles
Two angles that share a common side and share the same vertex
Vertical Angles
A pair of opposite congruent angles formed by intersecting lines
Complementary
Angles with a sum of 90 degrees
Supplementary
Angles with a sum of 180 degrees
Linear Pair
Two adjacent angles that form a straight line
Angle Bisector
a ray that divides an angle into two congruent angles
polygon
A closed figure formed by three or more line segments
Convex
vertices point outward from the polygon (puffed out like a balloon)
Concave
one or more vertices point into the polygon (caved in)
quadrilateral
polygon with 4 sides
pentagon
polygon with 5 sides
hexagon
polygon with 6 sides
heptagon/septagon
polygon with 7 sides
octagon
polygon with 8 sides
nonagon
polygon with 9 sides
decagon
polygon with 10 sides
dodecagon
polygon with 12 sides
Acute angle
An angle that measures less than 90 degrees.
Right angle
An angle that measures exactly 90 degrees.
Obtuse angle
An angle that measures more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees.
Straight angle
An angle that measures exactly 180 degrees.
