Aim

to determine if he could make dogs salivate by a bell that wasn’t og associated w/ food

2
New cards

Method

  • IV = presentation of stim

  • DV = when/amount dog salivated

  1. harness/tube to collect/measure saliva

BEFORE CC

  1. bell rung (NS)

  2. dog shown food bowl (UCS) → saliva (UCR)

DURING CC

  1. bell rung before food

  2. repeated (saliva every time)

AFTER CC

  1. bell rung (CS) → saliva (CR)

3
New cards

key findings

  • dogs can learn to associated NS (bell) w/ UCS (food), causing CR (saliva) to NS

  • CC = og NS → auto response thru associating w/ UCS that causes UCR

  • “spontaneous recovery” = CR reappears when CS shown after a while even after response gone

  • stim generalisation = after bell, buzzer works

4
New cards

contribution

  • foundation for behaviourism

  • introduced CC

  • learn thru associations (edu, therapy, adverts)

  • link btwn psych/physio processes for learning

  • reflexive response can be learnt

  • stim generalisation & extinction

  • explains phobias; desensitisation & graded exposure therapy to treat disorders

5
New cards

limitations

  1. cant generalise to humans

  2. unethical harm (some acid) unpleasant stim

6
New cards

SI

  • convenience

  • quant (obj phys measures)

  • experimental (repeated measures design)

  • RRR unethical
