Digital Memory Card Handling
Submitted as evidence. Retrieved by the property/evidence room designee who downloads images to the department server. The card is then returned to the submitting officer.
Photo Evidence File
All digital photographs are downloaded to this file on the department server and kept in a separate folder labeled with the case number.
Videotape Processing
Videotapes are properly marked with decals and processed like any other piece of evidence.
DNA Evidence Contamination
Occurs when DNA from another source mixes with DNA relevant to the case, often due to sneezing, coughing, or touching the face.
DNA Evidence Storage
Keep DNA evidence dry and at room temperature in paper bags or envelopes, sealed and labeled correctly.
DNA Evidence - Plastic Bags
Never place DNA evidence in plastic bags as moisture can damage the DNA.
DNA Evidence - Sunlight
Direct sunlight and hot conditions can be harmful to DNA.
DNA Evidence - Precautions
Wear gloves, use disposable instruments, avoid touching areas where DNA may exist, avoid talking/sneezing/coughing over evidence, avoid touching your face.
Elimination Samples
Samples collected to determine whether the evidence came from the suspect or someone else; methods include swabs and blood draws.
CODIS (Combined DNA Index System)
An electronic database of DNA profiles used to identify suspects, similar to the AFIS database and available through the FBI Laboratory.
Evidence Specialist
Trained in the collection of DNA evidence, meeting basic collection and packaging standards.
Submitting DNA Evidence
Requires filling out a lab submission form and DNA Contributor Information sheet, and direct transport to an accredited laboratory.
