Adipose Tissue
A specialized form of connective tissue consisting primarily of fat cells, surrounded by a meshwork of collagen fibers.
Cutaneous
Having to do with the skin.
Dermis
The thicker, deeper layer of the skin made up of connective tissue.
Epidermis
The most superficial layer of the skin.
Epithelium
The cellular layer that covers internal and external organs of the body, including the skin, blood vessels, body cavities, and glands.
Exfoliation
The separation, in layers, of pieces of dead bone or skin.
Exocrine Gland
A gland that secretes its products through a duct to the surface of the body or an organ.
Integumentary System
The outer covering of the body which is composed of the skin and the skin appendages, which are hair, the nails, the sebaceous glands and their ducts.
Skin
The natural covering of the body.
Sebaceous Gland
One of the skin glands that empty an oily secretion called sebum into the hair follicles near the surface of the skin.
Sudoriferous Gland
A small, tubular structure situated within and under the skin that discharges sweat through a tiny opening (pore) in the surface of the skin.
Allograft
A piece of tissue or an organ, such as the kidney, transplanted from one to another of the same species.
Autograft
Tissue transported from one part of the body to another in the same individual.
Biopsy
The surgical removal of all or part of a skin lesion; examination of tissue from the living body for diagnostic purposes.
Botox Injection
A highly purified preparation of botulinum toxin A, a toxin produced by bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
Collagen Injection
The practice of injecting collagen into a part of the face or body (often the lips) to make it larger.
Cryosurgery
Treatment performed with an instrument that freezes and destroys abnormal tissue.
Curettage
Removal of tissue, with a curette, from the wall of a cavity or another surface.
Debridement
The surgical removal of foreign material and damaged tissue from a wound.
Dermabrasion
A surgical procedure that involves the controlled scraping away of the upper layers of the skin by using sandpaper or some other mechanical means.
Electrosurgery
Division of tissues by a high-frequency current applied locally with a metal instrument or needle.
Excisional Biopsy
A surgical procedure in which an entire abnormal area is removed for diagnostic examination under a microscope.
Fulguration
A type of electrosurgery where the electrode is held away from the skin and transmits the electrical current to the skin lesion as a spark.
Incision and Drainage (definition)
Procedure to remove fluid or pus from a cyst or abscess.
Incisional Biopsy
A surgical procedure in which only a portion of an abnormal area is removed for diagnostic examination under a microscope.
Laser Surgery
A powerful beam of light that is used in some types of surgery to cut or destroy tissue.
Liposuction
The surgical suctioning of fat deposits from specific parts of the body, the most common being the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, chin, upper arms, back, and calves.
Moh’s Surgery
A surgical technique used primarily in the treatment of neoplasms.
Needle Biopsy
A procedure in which a small amount of tissue is taken for examination by using a hollow needle.
Skin Grafting
Used to cover an area where the patient’s skin has been lost to a burn, an injury, or surgery.
Xenograft
A transplant from one animal to another of a different species.
