Levels of Biological Organization
Epithelial Tissue
Tissue that covers surfaces and lines body cavities and organs.
Functions include: Protection, Absorption, Sensation, Secretion
Connective Tissue
Tissue that supports, connects, binds, and protects different parts of the body.
Examples include: Bone, Blood, Adipose tissue, Cartilage
Muscle Tissue
Tissue specialized for contraction and movement.
Skeletal Muscle
TYPES OF MUSCLE TISSUES:
• Voluntary
• Attached to bones
• Helps produce body movement
Smooth Muscle
TYPES OF MUSCLE TISSUES:
• Involuntary
• Found in walls of internal organs
Cardiac Muscle
TYPES OF MUSCLE TISSUES:
• Involuntary
• Found in the heart
Nervous Tissue
Tissue specialized for receiving and transmitting signals.
Skeletal, Smooth, Cardiac
ENUMERATE THE TYPES OF MUSCLE TISSUES
Red Blood Cell
A specialized cell primarily adapted for transporting oxygen.
Specialized Cell
Cells that have structures and features adapted to perform specific functions.
Transport oxygen
SPECIALIZED CELLS:
Purpose of Red Blood Cell
Transmits Signals
SPECIALIZED CELLS:
Purpose of Neuron
Contraction
SPECIALIZED CELLS:
Purpose of muscle cell
Store fat
SPECIALIZED CELLS:
Purpose of Adipocyte
Xylem
Vascular tissue that transports water and minerals from the roots toward the leaves.
Phloem
Vascular tissue that transports sugars/food produced by photosynthesis to other parts of the plant.
Epidermis
The outer protective tissue of non-woody plants.
Peridermis
Protective dermal tissue that develops in woody plants as they undergo secondary growth.
Stomata
Small openings, usually found on plant leaves, that regulate gas exchange.
They allow gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen to move into and out of the plant.
Root Hair Cell
A specialized plant cell with a long, thin extension that increases surface area for absorbing water and minerals from the soil.
