Factorial ANOVA
A statistical technique that allows researchers to analyze the effects of two or more independent variables on a dependent variable simultaneously.
Independent Variable (IV)
A variable that is manipulated to observe its effect on a dependent variable.
Dependent Variable (DV)
The outcome variable that researchers measure to see how it is affected by the independent variable(s).
Interaction Effect
A situation where the effect of one independent variable on the dependent variable differs across the levels of another independent variable.
Main Effect
The influence of one independent variable on the dependent variable, ignoring the influence of other independent variables.
Cell
A unique combination of levels of the independent variables in a factorial design.
Cell Mean
The average score of all participants in a specific cell of the factorial design.
F-Ratio
A value that represents the ratio of between-groups variance to within-groups variance in ANOVA.
Null Hypothesis
The hypothesis stating that there is no effect or no difference, commonly tested in statistical analysis.
Degrees of Freedom (df)
A parameter used in statistics that represents the number of values in the final calculation of a statistic that are free to vary.
Bonferroni correction
A statistical method used to reduce the chances of obtaining false-positive results when multiple comparisons are made.
Simple Effect
The effect of one independent variable at a specific level of another independent variable.
Marginal Mean
The mean score for all participants at a particular level of one of the independent variables.
Error Variance
The variance within conditions that cannot be attributed to the independent variables.
Interaction Pattern
The specific arrangement of differences in means which indicates the nature of the interaction effect.
Graphical Representation of Interaction
When lines connecting sets of bars for one factor across levels of another are non-parallel, indicating an interaction effect.
Post-hoc Tests
Statistical tests carried out after ANOVA to explore significant differences between group means.
