Rene Descartes
Philosopher (1596-1650) who argued for dualism of mind and body, believing that the physical body was a container for the nonphysical thing called the mind.
Dualism
The concept that the mind is spiritual (nonphysical) and the body is physical.
Thomas Hobbes
Philosopher (1588-1679) who argued against Descartes, asserting that the mind is what the brain does.
Philosophical Materialism
The view that all mental phenomena are reducible to physical phenomena.
Monism
The philosophical idea that everything is material, including that God is a material being.
