airway

a dire form of cardiac arrest in which he heart stops beating and there is no electrical activity in the heart. as a result, the heart is a total standstill

AED

AED are used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. its a sophisticated, yet easy to use, medical device that can analyze the hearts rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm

Back Blows

Back blows create a strong vibration and pressure in the airway, which is often enough to dislodge the blockage. dislodging the blockage will allow them to breathe again

BVM

bag valve mask or the ambu bag is a self inflating bag used to provide ventilation to the person not breathing normally. a BVM consists of a non-rebreathing valve an a face mask

Cardiac arrest

occurs when the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping. if this happens, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs.

chest compressions

it involves giving strong, rapid pushes to the chest to keep blood moving through the body. also called cadiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

chest recoil

full chest recoil means allowing the chest to return to normal position after chest compressions. its practical to allow for full chest recoil to increase venous return because leaning on the chest prevents the heart from filling with blood

first aid method for choking. its also known as abdominal thrusts because the method involves thrusting into the abdominal area

rescue breathing

type of first aid thats given to people who have stopped breathing. during rescue breathing, you blow air into a persons mouth to supply them with vital oxygen

an emergency code which is used to activate a set of actions in case a child/baby is missing from the hospital

when a staff member or visitor has a reason to believe there is a fire emergency in the building
