Retracting syringes
this syringe has a needle that is automatically retracted into the barrel of the syringe. The nurse fully depresses the plunger handle of the syringe to deliver the complete amount of medication and activate the retraction.
Retracting needles
this type of syringe is activated by a color-coded activation tab. When pressed laterally, the needle retracts into the safety chamber. The tip is covered, reducing the exposure to medication or blood and body fluids. After injecting the medication, the nurse may activate the retraction while the needle is still in the patient or withdraw the needle first.
Needles with shielding devices
this type of needle is engaged with a single-handed technique to cover the needle with the safety device. Hands and fingers remain behind the exposed needle at all times. Once clicked in place, the needle is securely locked inside the safety device
zero line
The first line on the barrel of every syringe
calibration lines
To measure medication in a syringe, you must be able to read ______ ____ on a syringe. They will vary according to the size of a syringe
first ring
Medication is measured at the ___ ____ (the one closest to the tip of the syringe) of the plunger must cover the calibration line for accurate measurement.
calibration lines
Besides total volume of the syringe, what other factor do we take into account when selecting a syringe?
insulin
This is a special type of syringe measured in units, only used for the administration of one specific medication
3 mL
This is the most commonly used syringe in med administration
TB
A 1 mL syringe has calibration lines representing 0.01 and 0.1 L, it is most commonly used to administer the ___ skin test
before administration
When using a prefilled syringe, if the syringe contains more medication than the ordered dose, when does the nurse dispose of the excess medication?
dermis
ID medications are administered into what layer of skin?

Every type of parenteral medication administration involves going though this layer of skin (top layer)
Parenteral
The delivery of medications using routes other than the gastrointestinal route

a glass container with a long narrow top that is snapped off to allow for withdrawal of medication
vial
a plastic or glass container that has a rubber stopper that is punctured for withdrawal of medication

Prefilled syringes, prefilled cartridges and ampules are all for ____ doses of drugs
expiration date
date is determined by the manufacturer and is stamped on the drug package and/or drug label. This is the last day that an unopened vial can be used
beyond-use date
For multi-dose vials, once the vial cap is removed or the vial is punctured, this new date is written on the drug label by the pharmacist or nurse who opens the vial

Rectal, no, enteral
What does PR mean as a medication admin route? Is it parenteral? If not, what is it?
penicillin, heparin, insulin
These parenteral medications are measure in units. The unit measurement expresses biological activity or potency of the drug and is the standard unit of measurement
electrolytes
Some ____ are measured in milliequivalents (mEq)
high alert medication
this indicates that a medication is at increased risk for patient harm
