Can you tell us a bit about your educational background and its relation to the chosen course? Why do you think you are a suitable candidate?

I completed my Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering from Balkh University in 2018. Later, in 2022, I graduated with a Master’s degree from Kabul Polytechnic University. My thesis focused on the seismic hazard assessment of the Kabul Block, which involved advanced geotechnical analysis.

Considering my academic background, I believe that studying a course in Geotechnical Engineering is the best fit for me. It aligns well with my previous studies and will help me build a strong career as a specialist in this field. I am confident that my education and research experience make me a suitable candidate for this course.

What is the reason you are applying for the course?

I am applying for the MSc in Geotechnical Engineering at Abertay University because this course gives both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. It also helps students learn how to apply new technical ideas in real projects. The modules are designed based on the needs of today’s industry, which makes this course very useful for my future job.

I am especially interested in these modules:

  • Finite Element Analysis – to use software and tools for geotechnical modelling.

  • Innovation in Design – to work on new ideas in real engineering projects.

  • Advanced Structural and Geotechnical Engineering – to solve bigger engineering problems.

  • Research Methods and Dissertation – to do research and write a final project.

In addition, this course aligns well with my educational background. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering and a Master’s degree from Kabul Polytechnic University. My Master’s research was about seismic hazard analysis within the Kabul area. I believe this course will help me become a geotechnical expert and build a successful career.

What is the reason for applying to the University of Abertay?

I chose Abertay University because of its strong focus on practical learning and industry relevance. Abertay is the only university in the UK that provides access to the Pagani TG63-150 CPT machine, which is used for soil testing—something very relevant to my career goals. The university was ranked among the top 10 in the UK for student satisfaction and it's located in Dundee, a student-friendly and innovative city. The course’s unique mix of technical modules and hands-on experience made it the best choice for me.Additionally, Abertay's emphasis on research and its strong connections with local industries provide vital networking opportunities for future employment in geotechnical engineering.

What are your reasons for applying to a UK university?

I chose the UK because universities here are respected all around the world. They provide a high-quality education system and are recognized internationally. UK universities focus not only on theory but also on practical experience, which is very important in engineering.

The UK also welcomes students from many different countries. I want to study in a place where I can learn from others and share my own experiences. According to the 2023 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey by Advance HE, 83% of all postgraduate taught students in the UK are satisfied with their courses, with international students reporting even higher satisfaction levels.

Have you ever been refused a visa?

Yes, I was previously refused a UK visa when I applied as a dependent. At the time, my wife had been awarded a scholarship to study in the UK, but I was unable to secure a scholarship myself. Based on the advice we received, we were instructed to apply for a dependent visa. Unfortunately, the visa consultant handling my application provided inaccurate guidance.

Furthermore, I did not submit separate evidence of my own or my family’s financial situation, which may have led the caseworker to conclude that I lacked sufficient funds to support myself in the UK. That was not the case, but I now understand that the lack of full and accurate financial disclosure contributed to the refusal.

My wife is currently studying to become a doctor, and I am pursuing a career as a geotechnical specialist. We are both highly motivated professionals with strong long-term goals. I hope to benefit from the high-quality education and opportunities available in the UK and to contribute to my field, either in Afghanistan or internationally.
