Use it or lose it
damaged areas of the brain need to be used to promote restructuring and stop further degradation
Use it to improve it
neuroplasticity can be induced through activities that targets the damaged areas to improve ability in the target skill
Specificity matters
learning is impacted and limited to the specific skill that is being learned in that context
Repetition matters
the target skill needs to be repeated to establish behavioral change and neural remodeling, plus maintaining that change
Intensity matters
the freater the intensity, the better the long term effect of intervention as long as its not too intense
Time matters
the earlier the intervention, the better
salience matters
the target skills and activities need to be relevant to the patient’s daily life
Age matters
the brain atrophies with age, so age must be a consideration when making a treatment plan
Transference matters
using one area of the brain to help rewire a damaged area
interference matters
attempts to rewire one skill may interfere with the neural networks behind another one. they also may develop compensatory strategies not as sophisticated or efficient as the original skill
Aphasia
Acquired language disorder that impairs language comprehension or production, mostly caused by strokes
Hemiplegia/hemiperesis
weakness/paralysis to one side of the body
Hemianopsia
Individual can’t see to the left or right of midline
