Parallelism
The repetition of grammatical structure in a series of words, phrases, or clauses.
Why does parallelism matter?
Clarity, Rhythm, Emphasis
Parallel Elements
Must have the same grammatical function in the sentence when joined by a coordinating conjunction in a series.
Correlative Conjunctions
Words like both/and, either/or, neither/nor, and not only/but also must join parallel elements.
Example of Incorrect Parallelism
"He is not only intelligent but also works hard."
Example of Correct Parallelism
"He is not only intelligent but also hardworking."
First Error Practice
She likes dancing, to sing, and going on walks. (Corrected: dancing, singing, and going on walks)
Second Error Practice
The manager was strict, unfriendly, and yelled at everyone. (Corrected: strict, unfriendly, and loud)
Third Error Practice
Either we go now or waiting until after lunch. (Corrected: go now or wait until after lunch)
