Neutrophils
type of phagocyte that are crucial for fighting infections by engulfing them. (form pus)
Contain large amounts of lysosome.
lobed nucleus which allows for flexibility.
Macrophages
Engulf and destroy pathogen.
able to detect products of bacteria (toxins) using recognition receptors.
initiate inflammation by releasing cytokines.
Opsonins
extracellular proteins which bind to pathogen body. Phagocytes bind to opsonins and begin to engulf.
Phagosome
Vesicle formed when pathogen is engulfed. Phagosomes + lysosomes = phagolysomes which begin to digest pathogen.
Antigen presenting cells
MACROPHAGES.
extra step where antigens from pathogens mix with glycoproteins called major histocompatibility complex.
Present antigens on macrophages cell surface membrane.
