New cards

Neutrophils

  • type of phagocyte that are crucial for fighting infections by engulfing them. (form pus)

  • Contain large amounts of lysosome.

  • lobed nucleus which allows for flexibility.

2
New cards

Macrophages

Engulf and destroy pathogen.

  • able to detect products of bacteria (toxins) using recognition receptors.

  • initiate inflammation by releasing cytokines.

3
New cards

Opsonins

extracellular proteins which bind to pathogen body. Phagocytes bind to opsonins and begin to engulf.

4
New cards

Phagosome

Vesicle formed when pathogen is engulfed. Phagosomes + lysosomes = phagolysomes which begin to digest pathogen.

5
New cards

Antigen presenting cells

MACROPHAGES.

  • extra step where antigens from pathogens mix with glycoproteins called major histocompatibility complex.

  • Present antigens on macrophages cell surface membrane.
