Killer T Cells
Killer T cells; two types are cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) and natural killer (NK) cells.
T Cells
Lymphocytes that mature in the thymus and become either CD4 positive or CD8 positive cells.
Helper T cells
Activate macrophages, induce inflammation, and help B cells and CD8 T cell response.
Cytotoxic T cells (CTL)
Lyses infected cells or cancer cells.
Innate Response
Cells that can establish in hours to days, while adaptive immunity takes days or weeks.
Secondary Lymphoid Organ
The primary site for T cell priming, either in the lymph node or in the spleen.
Naive T cells
Recognize cognate peptide presented by dendritic cells, then proliferate and differentiate.
Dendritic Cells
One of the most powerful antigen-presenting cells; presents the peptide to T cells.
Immunological Synapse
Enhances interaction between CD8 T cells and target cells, stabilizing the interaction.
Granulotoxin
Membrane-disrupting protein and enzymes that lead to apoptosis in target cells.
Perforin
Membrane disrupting protein that punches a hole on the membrane to allow entry of granzyme.
Fas Ligand
Expressed on activated CTL on the T cells, and the Fas expressed on target cells
Antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC)
Killer cells bind to antibody-coated cells through Fc receptors.
