Erythropoiesis
The process of making red blood cells (RBCs) from pluripotent stem cells in bone marrow.
Reticulocyte
An immature 'baby' red blood cell that indicates increased RBC synthesis when present in higher levels.
Erythropoietin (EPO)
A hormone released by the kidney that stimulates bone marrow to produce red blood cells.
Hemoglobin
A protein in red blood cells composed of heme and globin, responsible for oxygen transport.
Hyperbilirubinemia
An accumulation of bilirubin in the blood, often leading to jaundice.
Transferrin
A protein that transports iron in the blood.
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A laboratory test that measures various components of the blood, including hemoglobin, hematocrit, and red blood cell counts.
Normocytic Normochromic Anemia
Anemia characterized by a sudden drop in red blood cells, often due to acute blood loss.
Iron deficiency anemia
Anemia arising from chronic blood loss or inadequate iron, leading to decreased hemoglobin.
Hemolytic Anemia
A type of anemia where destruction of red blood cells occurs faster than their production.
