Kantian Ethics
Some actions are always right and some are always wrong. We do the right thing because it is our duty and because it is morally correct.
Immanuel Kant
German philosopher who believed every person deserves respect and dignity. Moral rules should apply to everyone equally.
Categorical Imperative
Ask: 'What if everyone did this action?' If it harms people or destroys trust, it is morally wrong.
Hypothetical Imperative
Doing something to reach a goal. Example: studying to pass the board exam.
Categorical Imperative (contrast)
Doing something because it is right. Example: reporting an error because honesty is duty.
Cheating and Dishonesty
Wrong because they destroy trust. Honesty is essential in nursing since patients trust nurses with their health and lives.
Respect for Persons
Every patient deserves dignity, respect, and kindness regardless of age, religion, culture, or financial status.
Autonomy
Patients have freedom to make decisions about their own healthcare after receiving complete and accurate information.
Importance of Kantian Ethics in Nursing
Reminds nurses to do what is right, protect dignity, and respect patient choices. Ethical nursing practice is based on responsibility and moral duty.
