Critics say the policies led to higher crime rates because it was now harder to convict accused people, it expanded the rights of the accused. These supreme court rulings led to a conservative backlash during the Nixon Administration (Law and Order). The court seemed to reflect the wave of liberal reform that characterized the “Great Society”.
Brown v. Board of Education (Topeka Kansas):
1954 ruled school segregation is unconstitutional, overturning Plessy v. Ferguson.
Baker v. Carr:
One person One vote, fair congressional boundaries that led to a shift in political power from rural to urban areas.
Miranda v. Arizona:
The accused must be read their rights, right to remain silent, what they say can be used against them, and right to a lawyer before interrogation.
Mapp v. Ohio:
illegally seized evidence that cannot be used in court.
Escobeda v. Illinois:
The accused has a right to a lawyer before being questioned.
Gideon v. Wainwright
Courts had to provide free legal counsel for those who could not afford it.
