What is electromotive force?

  • The electrical work done by a source (battery) in moving a unit charge (one Coulomb) around a complete circuit

    • You can think of the e.m.f. as the energy per coulomb

    • Measured in volts (V) using voltmeter

What is potential difference?

  • The work done (energy transferred) by a unit charge passing through a component in a circuit

    • Measured in volts (V) using voltmeter

Describe the use of voltmeters

  • Digital vs Analogue:

    • Digital use a direct numerical reading to a set number of significan figures

    • Analogue uses needle pointers

  • Voltmeters have different ranges depending on the size of voltage they are going to be used to measure

  • Always connected in parallel to the component they are measuring
