14th Amendment
A constitutional amendment stating that anyone born or naturalized in the U.S. is a citizen and entitled to equal protection of the laws.
Equal Protection
The principle that all individuals must be treated equally under the law.
Black Codes
Laws enacted in the South to restrict the rights of African Americans and maintain white supremacy.
Due Process
Legal requirement that the state must respect all legal rights owed to a person; part of the 14th Amendment.
Congressional Reconstruction
The period during which Congress took control of Reconstruction, overriding presidential policies.
