DSM-5
A manual that lists depressive and mood disorders, used by professionals to diagnose conditions based on descriptive criteria rather than etiology or pathology.
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
A condition formerly known as clinical depression, characterized by specific symptomatic criteria listed in the DSM-5.
Persistent Depressive Disorder
A mood disorder formerly known as dysthymia disorder, representing a less severe but long-lasting form of depression.
Descriptive Labels
Diagnostic terms that categorize symptoms based on communication and observation but do not explain the origin or cause of the struggle.
Biblical Definition of Depression
A mood of hopelessness, sadness, or grief which dominates life and usually leads to other problems and irresponsibility in God-given functions.
Outer Man Manifestations
Observable symptoms of depression such as dramatic changes in weight, isolation, sleep disturbances (too much or not enough), substance dependency, and an unkept appearance.
Inner Man Manifestations
Internal struggles associated with depression, including loss of hope, unmet expectations, anger, grief, self-pity, and uncaptured negative thoughts.
Fallen Countenance
A biblical Hebrew description of depression used in Genesis 4, referring to an appearance that looks sad, downcast, or where the glow of personhood is dim.
The Biological Model
A widely accepted model proposing that depression is the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain, though the transcript notes this theory has never been scientifically proven.
Somatic Feelings
Feelings associated with the operations of the body, such as hunger, sleepiness, and illness, which were even experienced by Jesus.
Affective Feelings
Feelings that result from operations in the inner man or spirit, such as emotions like anxiety, fear, anger, depression, and grief.
Emotion
A combination of a physiological feeling and a heart response; it serves as a window into the inner workings of the spirit.
Unmasking Depression
The process of getting behind the general symptomology to identify the specific spiritual causes, such as worldly grief, sin, or affliction.
Indicators of the Heart
The biblical view that affective feelings are designed by God to provoke introspection and alert us to something in the inner man that needs attention.
Living by Faith vs. Feelings
The principle that trust in Christ and obedience to His Word should govern actions rather than allowing subjective emotions to be the motivator.
Psalm 42 and 43
Passages that demonstrate the importance of talking to oneself with the truth and the character of God rather than listening to one's fallen feelings.
The Spiral of Depression
A process where responding to circumstances through the flesh and unbelief leads to sinful behavior, which causes worse feelings and leads to further bad decisions.
Reversing the Spiral
A biblical strategy for help that involves choosing to turn to God by grace through faith, even when one does not feel like doing so.
GSD (Google Self Diagnosis)
A term used to describe labels self-assigned by individuals based on popular cultural use rather than professional clinical criteria.
Blood-Brain Barrier
A physiological shield that means hormonal chemistry found in the rest of the body (detectable by tests) does not necessarily represent the neurochemistry in the brain.
Placebo Effect
The phenomenon where a person feels better because they believe a treatment will help, which some studies suggest accounts for the relief found in 8 out of 10 antidepressant users.
Biblical Strategies for Depression
Approaches to help including ruling out medical issues, ministering the hope of the Gospel, using the Psalms and Lamentations, and facilitating connections in the local church.
Accomplices of Depression
Other spiritual struggles that often work alongside depression, such as anger, misplaced trust, believing lies, and unresolved guilt.
