How Alcohol Works in the Body
depresses/sedates the controlling centers of your brain
small intestine
principle site for alcohol absorption
Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC)
amount of alcohol in the bloodstream
factors that affect alcohol effect
• Speed of ingestion• strength/Volume ingested• higher Altitude• Condition of stomach and intestines• Diet• Weight• Gender• Carbonation• Psychological condition• Alcohol tolerance• Coinciding medical conditions• Other drugs
One drink is considered
• One 12 ounce beer• Four ounces of wine• One ounce of 80 proof alcohol
rate of one small drink per hour
allow the liver enough time to process the alcohol and prevent the level of alcohol in the blood from rising notably
a fat person of 170 pounds will have a
higher BAC from the same amount of alcohol than a lean person of the same weight because alcohol is not soluble in fat
a woman of the same height and weight as a man
will generally absorb up to 30% more alcohol because they have more fat (not soluble) and more water (soluble), and less enzymes
Carbonation
creates a rapid rise in the BAC because alcohol moves into the small intestine faster
single or double drink may have a effect on the person as if he or she had three or four drinks
If an individual is already depressed, anxious, nervous, frightened, or simply unhappy because it is a multiplier of the depressing action
A higher level of alcohol tolerance
has no effect on a person's BAC level
taking combinations of drugs, usually because of drug
Intensification, Side Effect Reduction, Substitution, Collection
sequence in which alcohol affects the brain
1. JUDGMENT, 2. MOTOR CONTROL, 3. AUTOMATIC FUNCTIONS
Gastrointestinal System
gastritis, vomiting, Mallory-Weiss tears, interfere with some of the B vitamins, particularly folic acid and thiamin, and other nutrients, enlarged liver and alcohol-induced hepatitis , cirrhosis
Cardiovascular System
temporarily reduce blood, but, taken regularly can elevate blood pressure, cardiomyopathy
