IV management
The process of managing intravenous lines and fluid administration.
Arterial Blood Gases (ABG)
Tests that assess oxygenation, ventilation, and acid-base balance in the blood.
Venipuncture
The procedure of obtaining intravenous access for blood sampling or administering fluids.
Medical asepsis
Practices aimed at reducing the number and spread of microorganisms.
Surgical asepsis
Techniques aimed at eliminating all pathogens and non-pathogens from a specific area.
Antiseptics
Substances that destroy pathogens and are used to clean areas before invasive procedures.
Disinfectants
Agents toxic to living tissue, used only on non-living objects to kill microorganisms.
Electrolytes
Essential inorganic substances that help maintain physiological functions.
Cations
Positively charged ions, such as sodium and potassium.
Anions
Negatively charged ions, such as bicarbonate and chloride.
Homeostasis
The body's ability to maintain a stable internal environment.
Diffusion
The process by which substances move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Osmosis
The movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration.
Isotonic solution
A solution with the same solute concentration as that inside the cell, causing no net movement of water.
Hypotonic solution
A solution with a lower solute concentration than that inside the cell, leading to swelling of the cell.
Hypertonic solution
A solution with a higher solute concentration than that inside the cell, causing the cell to shrink.
Cannulation
The insertion of a cannula into a vessel or cavity.
IV catheter
A thin tube inserted into a vein for fluid or medication administration.
Infusion rates
The speed at which fluids or medications are delivered through an IV.
Patient stabilization
Ensuring that a patient is in a stable condition prior to administering treatment.
ABG analysis
A process used to evaluate the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH in the blood.
Acidosis
A condition characterized by a lower pH in the blood, indicating increased acidity.
Alkalosis
A condition characterized by a higher pH in the blood, indicating increased alkalinity.
Complications of IV therapy
Risks associated with intravenous administration, including infiltration, infection, and phlebitis.
Pressure infusions
Techniques used to ensure that fluid is delivered quickly and efficiently, often in emergency situations.
Peripheral vein
A vein located near the surface of the skin, commonly used for IV access.
Intraosseous (IO) access
A method to deliver medication and fluids directly into the bone marrow.
IV fluid replacement
The process of administering fluids to restore lost bodily fluids, often necessary in dehydrated patients.
