Ion
Atoms that have lost or gained electrons and carry an electrical charge.
Cation
Atoms that have lost electrons to become positively charged ions.
Anion
Atoms that have gained electrons to become negatively charged.
Ionic Compound Formula
Identify the cation and anion, then combine them in a ratio that balances the charges, resulting in a neutral compound.
Synthesis Reaction
When two elements or compounds combine to form a more complex product.
Exothermic
Energy released (in the form of heat, light or electricity).
Endothermic
Energy input (in the form of light, heat or electricity) to break the bonds in the reactants.
Decomposition Reaction
When a compound (only one reactant) breaks down into two simpler substances.
Smelting
Process to obtain a metal from its ore (in a blast furnace).
Single Displacement Reaction
When one element replaces another in a compound.
Double Displacement Reaction
When two reactants exchange a component.
Neutralisation
When an acid reacts with a base to produce salt and water.
Precipitate
An insoluble compound that forms in a precipitation reaction.
Spectator Ions
Ions that do not contribute to the precipitation reaction and are left out of the net ionic equation.
Net Ionic Equation
A representation of a precipitation reaction that includes only the ions directly involved.
Aqueous Solution
A mixture where water is the solvent, and other substances are dissolved in it.
