Variable
A symbol, usually a letter, that stands for a number and can act as a placeholder representing different values in different problems.
Dot (⋅)
A symbol used to signify multiplication in algebra to avoid confusion with the variable x.
Parentheses
A notation used to imply multiplication, such as 4(2) or 6(b), and to specify the order of operations.
PEMDAS
A mnemonic device used to remember the order of operations: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (interchangeable from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (interchangeable from left to right).
Substitution
The process of replacing a variable in an expression with a specific numerical value to simplify the expression.
Distributive Property
A foundational algebra skill that shows how to distribute a number being multiplied to every term inside the parentheses, such as 2(b+3c)=2b+6c.
Equivalent Expressions
Expressions that name the same number regardless of which value is substituted into their variables.
Combining Like Terms
A method of simplifying expressions by grouping terms that have the same variable parts, used for expressions with rational coefficients.
Undefined
The resulting solution when any number is divided by zero.
Coefficient
The numerical factor of a term that contains a variable, which can be a positive or negative integer, fraction, or decimal.
Rational Number
Every quotient of integers provided that the divisor is not zero.
Abstract
A concept in algebra referring to the use of letters to represent numbers and general mathematical relationships.
