Simple Squamous Epithelium
-very thin tissue: allows stuff to pass through

Main Function of Simple Squamous Epithelium
Diffusion & Filtration

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
takes in things and releases them

Functions of Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Absorption and Secretion

Simple Columnar Epithelium
“acts like a tree”
Absorbs nutrients and secretes mucus

Functions Stratified Squamous Epithelium
-multiple layers = protection

Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
secretes mucus to trap dirt and use cilia to sweep it out of the airways to keep clean
Cilia
hair-like projections

Transitional Epithelium
lets organs expand and hold liquid while acting like a protective barrier

Hyaline Cartilage
thin and transparent cells
-serves as cushion

Elastic Cartilage
-Dark fibers
Maintains the shape of the structure while allowing flexibility

Fibrocartilage
-thick and pink fibers
-smaller cell clusters
Function: strength with absorb compression shock

Reticular Tissue
found in framework of liver, lymph modes, bone marrow, and spleen
-black fibers: collagen fibers (reticular fibers)

Areolar Tissue
-found around blood cells and layers of the skin
contains elastic fibers (thin, hair-like fibers)

Dense Regular Tissue
found in tendons and ligaments

Adipose Tissue
found around organs between muscles

Bone (Osseous Tissue)
supports and provides levers for the muscles to act on
Fibroblasts
purple cells

Skeletal Muscle
-attached to bones
VOLUNTARY
-Striated (striped)
Functions: body movement, posture, and heat production

Cardiac Muscle
-found ONLY in the heart
INVOLUNTARY
-muscle fibers with one or two nuclei
-branch-like appearance
Responsible for pumping blood

Smooth Muscle
-found in the walls of hollow organs
INVOLUNTARY
-no stripes
Responsible for moving substances through internal organs
