Solution
A homogenous mixture of two or more substances.
Solvent
The majority component of a solution, often the liquid.
Solute
The minority component of a solution.
Electrolyte Solution
A solution containing a solute that dissociates into ions.
Non-electrolyte Solution
A solution containing a solute that dissolves as a molecule and does not conduct electricity.
Solubility
The amount of a compound that will dissolve in a certain amount of solvent.
Dilute Solution
A solution containing small amounts of solute in a given amount of solvent.
Concentrated Solution
A solution containing large amounts of solute in a given amount of solvent.
Molarity
A common unit of solution concentration, defined as the number of moles of solute per liter of solution.
Colligative Properties
Properties that differ based on the concentration of solute in a solvent.
Freezing Point Depression
The decrease in the freezing point of a solvent caused by the presence of a solute.
Boiling Point Elevation
The increase in the boiling point caused by the presence of a solute.
Osmosis
The flow of solvent from a lower-concentration solution through a semipermeable membrane to a higher-concentration solution.
Semipermeable Membranes
A membrane that selectively allows some substances to pass through but not others.
Osmotic Pressure
The pressure produced on the surface of a semipermeable membrane by osmosis.
