How do you perform 'Aim High In Steering' according to the Five Seeing Habits, what does it do for you, and what is its key phrase?
How: Imaginary target - baseball/dart board. What it does: Centers car in traffic lane: Safe path on turns. Key Phrase: REMEMBER, "FIND A SAFE PATH WELL AHEAD."
How do you 'Get The Big Picture', what does it do for you, and what is its key phrase?
How: How wide and deep? What's in it? Objects and ground. What it does: Keeps you away from billboards. Smooth stops and turns. Buys time. Key Phrase: REMEMBER, "STAY BACK AND SEE IT ALL"
How do you 'Keep Your Eyes Moving', what does it do for you, and what is its key phrase?
How: Move eyes: Front - 2 seconds, Rear - 5 to 8 seconds. What it does: Keeps you alive at intersections, keeps eyes ahead of car. Key Phrase: REMEMBER, "SCAN - DON'T STARE"
How do you 'Leave Yourself An Out', what does it do for you, and what is its key phrase?
How: Have escape route. Take path of least resistance. What it does: Space on all four sides, but always in front. Key Phrase: REMEMBER, "BE PREPARED, EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED"
How do you 'Make Sure They See You', what does it do for you, and what is its key phrase?
How: Communicate in traffic - horn, lights, signals. What it does: Establishes eye-to-eye contact. Key Phrase: REMEMBER, "DON'T GAMBLE - USE YOUR HORN, LIGHTS, AND SIGNALS"
What are the required following distances for speeds up to 30 mph versus over 30 mph, how is following distance calculated, and what is the 'WHY' reason?
Four to six second following time for speeds up to 30 mph, 6-8 seconds for speeds over 30 mph. Calculated by counting 1/1000 one, 1/1000 two, 1/1000 three when the vehicle ahead passes a stationary item until the front bumper reaches that item. WHY: BUYS TIME.
What is the requirement for eye-lead time, how is it established, and what is the 'WHY' reason?
Eight to twelve seconds of eye-lead time maintained depth of vision. Established by picking a stationary item ahead and counting 1/1000 one, 1/1000 two, 1/1000 three until the front of the vehicle reaches that item. WHY: CENTERS CAR IN TRAFFIC LANE.
Why should you scan the steering wheels of parked cars, what signs indicate a vehicle is occupied, and what is the 'WHY' reason?
To see if the vehicle is occupied (which presents hazards of exiting or pulling away). Indicators: steering wheels turned out, tail or brake lights on, exhaust from tail pipe. Treat as occupied if unsure and use a tap or loud blast of horn if necessary. WHY: TAKE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE.
What is the procedure for clearing intersections, why do you look left a second time, and what is the 'WHY' reason?
Scan ahead, look left, right, then back to left. Check traffic side mirror prior to entering and opposite traffic side mirror while proceeding. Look left a second time because that is the first lane of traffic entered. WHY: KEEPS YOU ALIVE AT INTERSECTIONS.
What space cushion should be maintained when stopped in traffic behind another vehicle, and what is the 'WHY' reason?
Leave enough space between your front bumper and the rear bumper of the vehicle ahead (proportionate to your vehicle size) so you can maneuver around if it stalls without backing up in traffic. WHY: HAVE ESCAPE ROUTE.
What is the 'Count One-Two-Three' rule after the vehicle ahead starts to move, and what is the 'WHY' reason?
Count one, two, three after the vehicle ahead has started to move before placing your vehicle in motion. This automatically establishes a space cushion and allows bringing eyes up to the driving scene ahead. WHY: KEEPS YOU AWAY FROM BILLBOARDS.
What is a stale green light, what factors affect your point of decision, and what is the 'WHY' reason?
A light you did not see change and are unsure when it will turn yellow or red. Establish a point of decision between front bumper and stop line to stop safely or continue through without hesitation/acceleration. Decision point factors: road, load, weather, and speed. WHY: SMOOTH STOPS AND TURNS.
What three tools are used to establish eye contact with others in traffic, and what is the 'WHY' reason?
Horn (primary tool: tap or loud blast), lights, and signals. Establishing contact allows expecting others to act in a reasonable and predictable manner. WHY: ESTABLISHES EYE TO EYE CONTACT.
What is the full procedure for pulling from a curb, and what is the 'WHY' reason?
Turn on traffic side signal, check traffic side flat and convex mirrors, look over traffic side shoulder to check blind spot between fuel tank and drive axle. Proceed when clear, and do not deactivate turn signal until all equipment is completely in the lane. WHY: COMMUNICATE IN TRAFFIC, HORN, LIGHTS, SIGNALS.
How frequently should you check mirrors and gauges, what rule governs eye movement, and what is the 'WHY' reason?
Check a mirror every 5 to 8 seconds (can substitute with a primary gauge: oil or water). Next eye movement must always be back to the front. NEVER go mirror to mirror, gauge to gauge, mirror to gauge, or gauge to mirror. WHY: KEEPS EYES AHEAD OF CAR.
