Joint
Where two bones meet, allowing body movement.
Synarthrosis
An immovable joint that provides very strong connections between bones.
Fibrous joint
A type of joint where bones are connected by dense connective tissue.
Diarthrosis
A freely movable joint, such as a synovial joint.
Amphiarthrosis
A slightly movable joint, stronger than a synovial joint.
Hinge joint
A joint that allows motion in one plane, such as the elbow.
Synovial fluid
A viscous fluid that lubricates joints, filling the joint cavity.
Meniscus
A fibrocartilage pad found between opposing bones in some joints.
Flexion
A movement that decreases the angle between articulating bones.
Extension
A movement that increases the angle between articulating bones.
Opposition
Movement of the thumb toward the palm or other fingers.
Glenohumeral joint
The ball-and-socket joint between the head of the humerus and the glenoid cavity.
Hip joint
A strong ball-and-socket joint between the head of the femur and the acetabulum.
Osteoarthritis
A type of arthritis caused by wear and tear of joint surfaces.
Rheumatoid arthritis
An inflammatory, autoimmune condition affecting joints.
Ligament
A connective tissue that connects bone to bone.
Tendon
A connective tissue that attaches muscles to bones.
Bursae
Small pockets of synovial fluid that cushion areas where tendons and ligaments rub against other tissues.
