Intelligence
the ability to learn from experience, solve problems, and use knowledge to adapt to new situations.
General Intelligence
according to Spearman and others, underlies all mental abilities and is therefore measured by every task on an intelligence test.
Intelligence Quotient
This is a mathematical formula that is supposed to be a measure of a person's intelligence. When it was first created, it was defined as the ratio of mental age (MA) to chronological age (CA)
Mental Age
a measure of intelligence test performance devised by Binet; the chronological age that most typically corresponds to a given level of performance
Chronological Age
the actual amount of time a person has been alive, measured in years from birth to the present
Standardization
Consistency and objectivity of how tests are administered and scored. In order to compare one person to another on a test, it is important that they take the test under the same conditions and the same scoring procedure is applied to both
Validity
A measure of the extent to which a test actually assesses what it claims
Construct Validity
how well a test measures the theory it is meant to measure
Predictive Validity
focuses on how well an assessment tool can predict the outcome of some other separate, but related, measure.
Reliability
the ability to consistently find similar results when a test is repeatedly administered in similar conditions
Test retest Reliability
the degree to which test results are consistent over time when the same participants take the same test at different times
Split half reliability
A measure of reliability in which a test is split into two parts and an individual's scores on both halves are compared
stereotype threat
a situation where an individual feels at risk of confirming a negative stereotype about their social group, which can lead to anxiety and impaired performance on a task related to that stereotype
stereotype lift
the phenomenon where individuals not targeted by a negative stereotype perform better on a task when the stereotype is activated
flynn effect
the observed trend where average IQ scores across populations have steadily increased over time
achievement tests
a test that is designed to assess a person's current skill set
aptitude tests
A test that is designed to predict a person's future success in a given area
fixed mindset
asserts that the brain and intelligence cannot change
growth mindset
the belief that one's abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort, learning, and perseverance
